(More customer reviews)I just had a new AC system put in, and the installer suggested I replace my Honeywell Chromagraph III, which I loved. However, he was right and it was old, and had no backlight, so at night I had to keep a flashlight nearby. He wanted to go with another brand, but with my previous experience with Honeywell, and because of the excellent reviews here, I insisted on the Honeywell TH8320. I don't regret it for a second. Does everything my previous thermostat did, and more! Like the other unit, it automatically switches from heat to cool (but NOTE: it comes set as a default as Heat OR Cool, so you have to go into the Installer instructions to make it automatic, but it's easy to do that), it can have an always-ON night light (bye bye to that flashlight now!), it has a FAN Circulation mode (runs 35% of the time, which is great and at night you aren't frozen out), it has a wonderfully easy to use touch screen, and this one can do a whole lot of other things I don't need (like run 3 heat and 2 cool systems, plus heat pumps and emergency heat). Basically, all 4 of the Honeywell 8000 units are nearly identical -- 3 are supposed to be installed by professional installers (the 8320, which is this unit; the 8321 which adds humidity control, and the 8110, which only has hook ups for 1 heat and 1 cool system but has all the same features), and the 8500, which is designed as a do-it yourself thermostat. I don't have that one, but because my 8320 had 2 manuals (one for the homeowner and one for the installer, my guess is that the 8500 tells you everything you need to know without pretending it is for the professional installer). And believe me, my installer didn't even look at the installer manual and didn't know how to to switch to the fully automatic function or the night light, and he didn't have a clue that there is a special installer TEST program to test his installation, but luckily I read BOTH manuals and showed him. So if you get one of these units -- and I highly recommend them -- make sure you read BOTH manuals. As I said, the Installer manual has some very important features. But the unit itself is great, and even my wife loves it!

(More customer reviews)This thermostat is worth every penny! It does exactly what it should do, and the instructions were perfect for my heating/cooling system. I didn't have any problems putting it in.
What the other review didn't mention is that this thermostat has extra features over the other Hunter models. The big difference is the Energy usage information. It tracks the amount of time that the system was on today, yesterday, this week, last week, and total since you installed it. It's neat being able to come home and see that the air conditioning was on for only 30 minutes, or on for 2 hours. This helps you figure out how your thermostat settings are affecting your real energy usage. It also has a filter reset reminder, which tracks the number of hours that the system has been used with the current filter. This is useful, since most filters say they last 3 months. But the real lifetime of the filter is based on how much air has been blown through it. You could run it for 12 hours a day, and it might only last one month. On the other hand, you could run it only 10 minutes a day, and it would probably last 6 months. With the filter reminder, it's able to tell you when you truly need to replace the filter.
Also, the backlight works perfectly in my opinion. It only stays on for 5 seconds after you stop pushing any buttons. So if you are programming things, then it continually stays on until you are done programming. Plus, if you are just checking the current temperature or setting, 5 seconds is more than enough time to read a 2-digit number. I love this thermostat, and recommended it to a friend who loves it as well. It's much lower-priced compared to other competitors like Honeywell, and has a nice, simple interface. The blue backlight is gorgeous as well, and other brands don't all offer an indiglo backlight like this one does. There really isn't anything I don't like about this product. I HIGHLY recommend it!

3. The ability to program the device off the wall while sitting down comfortably with the manual and pieces of paper is convenient
4. The one touch feature to tell the device that you home for the day wthout other intervention is convenient.

(More customer reviews)The new Honeywell Prestige t-stat in the HD format is really a cool idea, I purchased this t-stat to replace the white rogers big blue, being certified to do A/C I thought this was going to be easy, some things to remember, 1. you need a 5 or more wire system on your A/C / Heat this thermostat takes a common wire to power it up, if you have only 4 wires then it will NOT work you will have to pull new wire from your control board to the t-stat, and forget about calling Honeywell customer service they are no help what so ever, after pulling new wire and doing the traditional hook up it was very easy to get this thermostat up and running it is very easy to program, I purchased the outside remote (wireless) to let me see what the weather outside was doing all in 1 place, this is a cool feature. I like the screen it is very well lit, it has very easy programs to operate through, like setting time, date cooling days ect The best feature is the clarity of the screen, at night in the absolute dark there is the thermostat all lit up easily read with the lights off, and you can adjust the screen brightness. There are a myriad of applications that can be chosen when programming, something I have never seen before in any programmable thermostat, I would suggest staying from installers mode, in that mode there are too many things you can mess up that are important that are pre set, I went in and only changes 1 thing, which was to let my A/C system had 2 stages, it comes set to 1 by the factory. All in all a great purchase if you can get over paying for cutting edge technology. I would highly recommended this thermostat!!!

(More customer reviews)I needed to replace my fifteen year old thermostat for one which was easier to adjust and change settings if needed. I chose Honeywell as they have always gave great life and service. I am using this on a steam heat system only, so I needed to connect only two wires. I did leave the jumper in as directed in the manual. I did power off my heating equipment (very important) we don't want surprises. This thermostat has a large display which can be back-lit simply by quickly pressing one of the control buttons. I only needed to program morning and night settings, you simply skip over the times you don't want to program. When in operation it displays both set temperature and room temperature. I would have to say it is accurate within +/- 1 degree as I compared it with three other thermometers. I installed the batteries before I attached it to the wall base and did all setting and programming ahead of time. The batteries are easy to replace when needed as they fit in a flip out holder from the side, no need to remove any covers or remove the thermostat from it's base.

(More customer reviews)First, if you know anything about installing thermostats, it's no harder than any other. In other words, there are 4-7 colored wires, and you have to put them in the right place. That's it.
Now, for the thermostat, it is just beyond good. From the easy programming to the flexibility of the options, to the FULL AUTO mode so you never have to worry about switching from heat to cool again, it's a set and forget job. And the options for temp and holiday hold, the circulation feature that keeps your whole house more constant, etc. Great.
Remember, this is a single stage model, but there are slightly more expensive versions for multi-stage setups, so choose the right one. Most people will be fine with the 8110. Even if you live in an apartment or a rental, buy this, install it, save money, be more comfortable, then put the old one back before you move out. it's worth it.

The TX9000TS is the 3rd electronic thermostat I've owned and is probably the most intuitive of them all. Lux has provided a generous sized display and a very responsive touch-screen. The back light is a pleasing blue. The unit is 3 parts - the main unit, a back plate where you connect the wires and an optional accent plate that provides a .75 inch border to provide a finished look.
I had read the earlier reviews on Amazon and had decided that I will not read the instructions prior to the install to determine how intuitive this system really was? The only exception I would allow myself was if the wiring was significantly different from my old unit - which it was not!
The setup was relatively simple. Removed the old unit and replaced it with the new back plate and accent bezel. No new holes to drill. The accent bezel is the closest piece to the wall and is held up by the back plate. I straightened the old wires, inserted into the corresponding clamp and tightened the screws - Total time of 15 minutes.
I inserted 2 new alkaline batteries (And NO, I did not use the recommended Duracell or Energizer!) and the unit came to life. I clicked on the time and it started beeping. I could see arrows on the right and intuitively touched them to set the time. Did the same to set the day. Touching the 'Menu' got me into the programming mode for the unit. I touched "SCROLL" to skip to the next feature, and "NEXT" for the next step in the feature programming. I do admit I took a few iterations to get used to the programming logic. Also 'YES' to accept settings is a little different from the colloquial "ENTER" we are used to in a computer literate world!
This unit is programmable for every day of the week. I, at most, need one setting for all week-days and one each for Sat and Sun. While programming the days, I noticed that they had a "COPY" function. I was sure that this was to copy my settings - every time I touched it, it went over to the next day. I thought that the data was being copied over and I did verify it after I completed my first iteration of programming. By the way, once you are in the programming mode, setting the start time for any period and/or setting the temperature is as simple as touching the time or temperature and using the up/down arrows. Could not be simpler!
I was fortunate that I had the program settings available from my old unit - once I went through a few iterations of errors (not using "YES" to accept settings!) the unit was programmed - Total time of 15 minutes
I spent another 10 minutes setting the 'Filter Usage' and 'Swing settings' and reviewing the 'Temperature Calibration' and 'Energy Usage' monitor. The Swing settings only went upto 2.5 degrees in 0.5 degree increments (One of the other reviewer found that it went upto 3.0 degrees???)
I did not see the 'Smart Recovery' option and thought that it might be a switch on the circuit board like my last unit. It was 1.30 in the morning and I did not feel like reading the instructions. I attached the TX9000TS and it kicked off instantly.
The instructions did have the following options that can be changed with the small slide switches towards the back of the main unit -- 12/24 hours time format, Smart Recovery, Degrees in C or F, and 2 or 5 minute interval between restarts.OTHER REVIEWER'S CONCERNS
Some of the other reviewers have concerns that the unit does not automatically switch between heating and cooling to keep the temperature constant. This is done intentionally!
In the summer, our ideal temperature is 74 degrees. When we leave for work, our "DAY" period is set to 82 degrees so that the AC does not cool the home while we're out. In an auto switch between heating and cooling, the heat would take over and get the temperature to 82 degrees and maintain it - which is NOT the intent!! We do not want the AC to cool any below 82. I can, of course, see the gentleman's point if one spends 90% of their time at home and is OK with the associated heating/cooling cost.PROS:
* TX9000TS is rated #1 by Consumer Reports
* Cheapest in its class for display size and features
* Very easy to program
* Love the LARGE display and the accuracy of the touch zones.
* Very nice Backlight and fantastic positioning of the backlight switch.
* Like the "CHANGE FILTER" feature. I used to use a Sharpie on the filter and then try to read the date through the grill
* Like the "Low Battery" alert.
* Power Usage also seems like a valuable feature...will find out in the near future! I did manage to find it by pressing menu and scrollingCONS:
* Lux could have done a better job with the programming terminology and could have improved the user experience with regards to the programming. For e.g., if you had to program day and time, it continues to loop when you click "NEXT"...to exit the programming you need to use "MENU".
* Another feature I miss from my old Honeywell is the "RUN PROGRAM" button which when pressed would clear the "OVERRIDE" functions and run as per the program. The TX9000TS unit achieves this either by touching the temperature and using the arrow keys to bring the temperature to the programmed value, OR, by touching "HOLD" twice. Minor inconvenience.
* The tabs, on the top of the base plate, that hold this unit are very small and I am in constant fear of breaking them off. My old Honeywell had a very robust design.CONCLUSION:
I do agree that the TX9000TS is not completely intuitive, but it is nowhere as unintuitive as others claim. I do like to play around with stuff that I get...if it were all super-intuitive and easy then it'd be no fun! ;o)

After researching thermostats, I replaced my builder-grade 1 week thermostats with a couple of Lux 1500E units. This was one of Consumer Reports' best buy models from last year (the other also a Lux). Additionally, I liked Lux's programming dial which simplifies programming; with the dial, there are fewer arcane button press combinations to deal with. Installation was simple and straightforward. The display on the 1500E is fairly large and has an electroluminescent back light that's activated by pressing any button. I'm farsighted but can read the display without my glasses. The 1500E is a 5-1-1 thermostat but also includes a "special" schedule that can used for vacation or holiday making this a 5-1-1-1 thermostat.
I found programming to be quick and simple and the unit works as advertised. I have one complaint and one quirk to mention. The complaint: The operating instructions aren't the best. In particular, there is precious little explanation of the "swing" function or what the swing numbers actually mean. I sent an email to Lux and received a phone call the next day with a thorough explanation. Fantastic customer service!! For the record, the swing setting numbers correlate to quarter degrees (the instructions should state this but don't). The default setting is 1 meaning the thermostat will cycle when the temperature deviates .25 degrees. Keeps the house temperature constant but heat or AC will constantly cycle. Setting the swing to 4 will cause heat or AC to turn on when temperature deviates 1 degree (4 X .25) from the set temperature. You can set the swing up to a value of 9 (2.25 degrees). Here's the quirk part: with my old thermostat, if I set the temperature to 69, the heat would turn on when the displayed temperature dropped to 68 and turn off when the displayed temperature rose to 70. The 1500E, with a swing setting of 4, doesn't work quite the same way. Even though displayed temp is 68, heat won't come on right away. It's almost as if the thermometer controlling the display isn't the same one controlling the thermostat itself. Either that, or a swing setting of 4 is working differently than I'm expecting. Please note, I do not find this a problem with the 1500E, just a little odd. Also note: most instructions accompanying thermostats are lacking.
Overall, I am very pleased with the Lux 1500E. It feels well built, has a nice display, and a competitive price. Add Lux's great customer support, and I'd highly recommend it.

Thermostat,Electronic White-Rodgers 1F85-277 Review

(More customer reviews)As the previous reviewer said, the temp is off by 5-6 degrees. Worse still, I got to my office (an animal clinic) to find the ACTUAL temp in the building to be 102 at 7:00 AM. The heater was running despite the fact that the A/C was the only thing on. (It was set to the snowflake symbol, only.) The thermostat was unresponsive to any attempt to shut it off. The only way to shut down the system was at the main breaker. The heat pump was inspected by an HVAC technician and determined to be functioning properly. Fortunately, no animals were harmed by this faulty device, but they were very distressed. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS DANGEROUS PRODUCT!! I had mine replaced immediately with a Honeywell.

Be very careful about the check mark before the days of the week. When you make a temperature input it will apply to EVERY day that has a check mark and erase what you previously inputted. You have to cycle through the days twice to eliminate the CHECK marks for the other days to enter in data for just one day.

It has two overides: one for temporary bi-bass [from one preset to another] or a vacation overide [until you return home]. The only thing negative about the thermostat is that it doesn't light up for easier viewing in dim light or darkness.

(More customer reviews)I finally decided mid way through the summer to replace my aging thermostat with a more modern programable one after the shock of the first summer electric bill. Every day I would raise the thermostat before I left, but ocassionally I'd forget and waste a days worth of cooling. There are many choices for thermostats, and I initially looked at this model because of the name, Honeywell, A brand that I recognize and Know is a major player in thermostats and climate controll. I purchased this model because of its great step by step instruction and ease of installation. I have worked with other older programable thermostats, and many use to be difficult to program and even more dificult to figure out the display. Well, this unit has a nice easy to read picture display, and the programing is a snap. One feature that is nice is that it has 4 programable times during the day: wake up, going to work, home from work, bedtime, allowing you to save energy over the day, but also over night when it is cooler. It also has easy to program saturday and sunday settings as well, with available 4 programing settings as well if needed. So if your in the market for a new thermostat, this is a nice simple unit, affordable, and easy to use, why waste more money on a more expensive model.

(More customer reviews)For the price you really can't beat it. It was cheaper than Hunter and Honeywell 7 day models. It looks nicer than the Hunter models as well.
Installation was very easy, and the programming directions are very easy to follow. Since it's a 7 day model, you can have a (different) program for each day.
You set the time/temp for MORNING, DAY, EVENING, and NIGHT. You can set this for each day, or use the COPY button to apply it to the next day.
I also like the backlight feature which stays on for 20 seconds at the push of the LUX button.
Check out the product manual for all the features. I definitely recommend it.

Honeywell RTH7600D Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat Review

(More customer reviews)Honeywell makes a very large line of programmable electronic thermostats. At first glance, this particular thermostat has nothing to distinguish it from any other programmable tstat from your local hardware store. (7-day programming, +/- 1 degree accuracy, etc.) However, this thermostat has some functions that make it quite a bit better. I've had RiteTemp's and Lux tstats, and this one is much better.
Most electronic thermostats kick on the system when you are one degree under, and then run it until you are one degree over. This (and all Honeywell electronic tstats) instead target a certain number of cycles per hour (based on system type), and try and hold the temperature as constant as possible. Since I installed this a few days ago, it has not budged off of the setpoint.
Another cool feature is the recovery feature. Basically, it measures how quickly your house is losing heat (or warming up, in the summer), and kicks on the system at the correct time so it is at your setpoint right at the time you program. This eliminates guessing how long it will take your house to heat so it will be toasty when you get home at 6PM. Instead, you just set the tstat for 6PM and let it figure out the rest.
The install guide is clear and presented me with no problems. Admittedly, I don't have a complicated system (1-stage heat/cool.) It tells you how to properly wire it, and is fairly straightforward on when you need to call for help. Most folks shouldn't have any problems.
IMPORTANT: Use the included wire stickers! Some installers do not attach, say, the white wire to the "W" terminal. Depending on whim, they can completely attach the wires at random. Bad things happen if you plug the wrong wire onto the wrong terminal. If a wire was on the "W" terminal before, it needs to go on the new W terminal, even if it is bright yellow.
I didn't have any trouble at all programming this one... in a few easy steps:
1) Hit the "Schedule" button.
2) Use the arrow keys and the "select" button to select which day(s) you want to program. Hit "Next Step".
3) Use the arrow keys and "Next Step" to go through the setpoints and times.
4) Hit "Done" when finished.
If you need to set any advanced options (like changing to a two-stage furnace or A/C, setting heat pump options, etc.): Hit "System", then hold down "Fan" for five seconds. Use the table in the manual and "Next Step" to pull up the option you need to change and use the arrow keys to change it. I set up the Filter Change Reminder that way. The fact you have to refer to the manual isn't that bad since they are options you won't have to change more than once.
