CHAIN SAW GAS 20" 48CC Review

CHAIN SAW GAS 20 48CC
Average Reviews:

I baught this saw when my Stihl was in the shop and I needed an extra saw. It isn't exactly professional grade, but far better in quality than I expected. The power to weight ratio is good for the novice user. Very light weight and almost no impact on the user's wrists and shoulders due to the coil spring handle mounts. The chain that comes on the saw is a little mild for serious hardwood cutting but more than ample. I have had this saw about two weeks now and have put at least 12-15 hrs of run time on it without a complaint. Also, unlike many economy saws - this saw sports a real fuel tank and oil reserve. Will run over a half hour to the fill-up. Would recommend to any winter wood cutter or Christmas tree farmer.

I bought this saw for general use around my yard. For the money, its a great saw. I used it all day yesterday and it ran great. The only flaw I found was a cheap pull-cord setup that you need to be careful with. The pullcord housing and fly-wheel is all made of plastic...so I can tell Ill have to replace that at some point. Other than that, the saw runs great, and does a great job. FYI the saw does NOT come ready to go. Make sure you tighten the bar support bolts and add all the fluids. Great saw just to have at the house for occasional use.

Husqvarna 235E 16-Inch 34.4cc 2-Stroke Gas-Powered Chain Saw Review

Average Reviews:

I had heard a lot of good things about Huskvarna's reputation, and now I can see why. This product is spectacular!
My biggest gripe about most consumer chainsaws is that they are often difficult to start, either initially or when they are warm, so that by the time it starts, your arms are already sore from pulling the cord over and over again and you're exhausted.
This saw comes with a laminated instruction card. Attach it to the case handle and always refer to it to refresh your memory. If you follow the startup instructions, it starts on the second or third pull, every time. And when warm, up to 30 mins of being off, you can usually just leave the choke off and it will start on the first or second pull. So sweet! Why they don't all do this, I don't know.
Reliable startup is the main reason I bought this saw, after being frustrated with my previous Stihl and Craftsman saws that would often refuse to start or constantly needed to be taken apart.
And in case you forgot to stabilize the fuel and left gas in it for several months, the 345 doesn't mind. It still starts up right away. Wow.
The saw also cuts awesome. It's built to reduce vibration, and it cuts hard woods like a breeze.
Maintenance is very easy. Remove the chain guard and clean the guard in the kitchen sink. Then use a little air spray can to clear off the gunk around the chain drive. Clean the saw after each use and I'm sure it will last for years.
I don't know what these other reviewers problem is with the chain brake. I haven't needed to remove the chain brake cover nor fuss with the spring. And I've never had the chain jump off, and that's even when it got pinched.
There's only one negative -- make sure you remove any extra chain oil from the saw after each use, because it will tend to keep lubricating the chain, and 6 months later you'll find an oily mess in the case. But just make that part of your post-sawing maintenance, unless you know for sure you're going to be using it again very soon. (I didn't have any problem leaving the lubricated oil in the saw when the saw sat on the shelf for a copule of months... but after it sat unused for 6 months, I found this to be an issue. But I'm chalking that up to common sense maintenance.)
I've had mine for about a year-1/2 now, and I LOVE it. I almost look forward to trees falling down in storms now! LOL, but it's true. This saw is an absolute joy. Worth every extra dollar.

Husqvarna 445 18-Inch 45.7cc 2-Stroke Gas Powered Chain Saw Review

Husqvarna 445 18-Inch 45.7cc 2-Stroke Gas Powered Chain Saw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this saw not long ago and have put probably 20 hours on it this season. It was my first "nicer" chain saw and I wanted something that could handle a 20" bar. I think the 45cc engine is underpowered for a 20" bar, as I had trouble getting through some 16" locust logs with the stock 18" bar and chain.
My advice: this saw is great for the occasional user. For felling and bucking up hardwoods, especially larger ones, you'll thank yourself if you save the extra money for a 455, a 353, or other slightly larger Husky. I also didn't like the fact that it doesn't have adjustable oil flow, though it hasn't caused me any problems thusfar. This saw is a great, lightweight beast for softer hardwoods and will eat through softwoods like butter. For larger logs, sustained use, and harder woods I'd recommend spending the extra $100-150 for things like the magnesium crankcase and extra power. I wish I had.

I picked this saw up at a local clearance sale for $70.80 . . . I thought what could I lose for such a low price. I will admit however I was skeptical . . .having run Stihl and Husqvarna my whole life . . .What a pleasant surprise this little saw was! It started easily and cut fast. I cut three cords of firewood with it the first week I had it and the little green beast did not fail me once, even biting into 20 inch logs. My only complaint is the lack of a vibration dampening handle bar system . . .after running the saw for several hours the hands feel slightly numb . . .the verdict: unbeatable consumer saw for the price!

This saw arrived very quickly, and will satisfy my need for a back-up saw for clearing our recurring storm damage. I found the quality of the reconditioning lacking, however. This saw is a "self oiler". I'm sure this is intended to imply that the chain is automatically oiled while in use, but it also gets oil all over the operator. The saw arrived with the carburetor in need of significant adjustment - a problem the manual says requires return to a repair facility. I made a tool to perform the adjustment at home. The chain sent in a sealed package was too dull to use, but I sharpened it. These things should have been done at the reconditioning facility.

Average Reviews:

I'm on my second Wild Thing. The first lasted about 7 years and the second is going into its seventh year. I've worn out several bars and a half dozen or so chains. I've got 7.5 acres of Texas mountain cedar and live oak that I've been working my way through. I've had troubles getting them to start and run consistently at the start of the cutting season, but then I figured out that if I use fresh gas the problem disappears. It takes two pulls on full choke and two pulls on half choke to get it to start from cold, but then they run like a champ and will start on the first pull at half choke if you shut it down and then restart while it's still warm. Now admittedly it isn't a 3 or 400 dollar saw and won't last forever, but the fact is that at about $150 each with not a penny spent on maintenance I don't care. It does the job I bought it for and that's all I can ask.

I've read numerous complaints about the "tooless" tightening system that this saw is equipped with, and yes, it is a badly designed system (plastic parts that should be made of metal strip out too easily).
However, if your saw is under the two year warranty, chances are that Poulan will replace the tooless system with the traditional system that uses a screwdriver for chain tightening absolutely free. I called them on a Friday, got the old-style part by Tuesday. Saw works great now and tightening of the chain is still really easy.
If you're having probs, contact Poulan or go to [...]. i couldn't be happier with mine.

Husqvarna 455 Rancher 20-Inch 55-1/2cc 2-Stroke Gas-Powered Chain Saw Review

Husqvarna 455 Rancher 20-Inch 55-1/2cc 2-Stroke Gas-Powered Chain Saw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just picked up a 455 Rancher about a month ago (today is 4 May, 2006). This is a great saw. I had been using for more than 20 years, and still use to some degree a Stihl 028; another excellent saw.
There are some pros and cons to this saw as with all things.
Here's what I like. It's easy to operate and maintain. Accessibility of the under-cowel components such as the air filter, spark plug, and clutch housing is a no-brainer. It starts easy. In fact, you really don't need the pressure valve. It "pops" after a few short and fast pulls. Remember, once the saw "pops" with the choke, un-choke it and pull it again. You do not need to warm a two stroke with the choke on like you would a 4 stroke engine. Attempting to warm with the choke is the biggest cause of two stroke engine flooding.
Here's what I do not like. The low/hi mixture settings are limited by EPA regulations; a complete and total joke. If you remove the controls to optimize your settings, the warranty is void. But, I think it's better to do that than cook engine from lean settings. There aren't enough chainsaws running in any given period of the day to justify this regulation. So if you are a casual user, really pay attention to the break in procedures. Since the saws run lean, you need to make sure to break them in with extra care. If you use them much more frequently, remove the EPA limiters and richen out the hi/low mix, otherwise you will cook your engine.
Overall this is a great saw. The chisel chains do well for heavier applications. Be careful of kickback with these style chains. You can get low-kick back chains from any dealer. It's all a matter of personal preference.
I have outfitted my saw with an Oregon 20" Bar, chain, and rim sprocket. Once again this is a personal preference issue. The power head of the 455 is plenty and the applications many. If you are a causal user of this saw, talk with the folks at the saw shops for tips and ideas. They are a repository of knowledge and can help you make informed decisions about your saw.
-Washington State

I have never written a review before but after using this piece of junk I felt compelled to do so. I own a smaller Poulan saw and liked it enough to buy the bigger one. The 46cc starts and runs great, no problem with the engine at all. It's the chain tensioning device that makes this saw really frustrating to use. Someone decided to "improve" the time tested method of tightening the chain by turning a screw, to this new plastic adjustment dial thing that you don't need tools for. It doesn't work! The adjustment never holds and I have to retighten the chain about every 15 minutes! I thought it was because the chain was new and needed to stretch but I have been using it for sometime now and the problem is getting worse. On more than one occasion this device has allowed the chain to come off during operation, a dangerous and anoying situation that caused damage to the chain and the saw housing. I spend more time fixing this saw than using it. I was a big fan but now I will not buy another Poulon. I wish they would have stuck with the old design which worked just fine and this would be a great saw. I guess Poulon never heard the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
