(More customer reviews)These filters strike a good balance between cost and performance. I've been using them for years. They protect your respiratory tract and your HVAC equipment. People with extreme sensitivity should consider something like the Filtrete "Ultra Allergen" line, but the rest of us will be fine with this model. Always, always always, change them at least every three months. Check it monthly the first few changes; it's pretty easy to tell if you need to change it more frequently.
However, these exact filters (same manufacturer's part number) are available at my local big-box home improvement store for 33% less than this price. And that their one-off price vs. Amazon's 4-pack price. I'm surprised and disappointed, since Amazon's usually able to beat out the clunky supply chains of the brick-and-mortar-o-saurs.

One thing was missing when we moved in to our new house some 12 years ago, the type and actual size of the air filter. Builders often use prefabricated intakes and, just as often, fail to give the customer/buyer the source and part number for the correct filters. Thankfully, through my searching I found that Precisionaire had the correct filter and have been purchasing these filters ever since.

(More customer reviews)First about the product: Make no mistake these are not you Home Depot filters they are made of a soft material that almost feels like velour when you touch it.
Within two days I notices the dust in our house had gone down to almost nothing; it has been a major problem since we built the home. I tested it by dusting the top of a jewelry chest and for three days wiped one third each day by the fourth day you couldn't tell day one from day three, I know this seems like a short time but believe me you could notice it the day after you dusted.
The Vendor: I first ordered these because of the Merv 13 rating however as I was looking at the size I thought I had found it and said that's my size; ours are called 20x22x1 which are really 19 3/4 x 21 3/4 x 3/4 after ordering 12 of them I was looking at some other sizes and noticed a review that I had not seen stating that the filters are shipped 1/2 inch short of what the stated size is, e.g. 20z22x1 would be 19 ½ x 21 1/2 by 3/4 this would have made the filter too small for our unit, and although it would have worked anyway why get a MERV 13 filter if you are going to have space around it. I contacted the vendor right after I placed the order, within a day they wrote back that I would not have to cancel my order they would make them to the size I wanted. It took an extra week however when I received them they were exactly as promised.
Conclusion: This is a great product and a good vendor; why they choose to use a higher undersize than what is standard is beyond me. Check the size as shipped before ordering and if it works for you then buy this product.

However, it is supposed to be possible to filter out the dust. Over the years, I have steadily increased the quality of the filter that I use for my forced air heating system. However, until now I have not noticed any obvious difference in my allergic reactions that seem to start with the heating season.
There are two cats in my house. I have read that cat dander, tiny flakes of cat skin shed by the cats, is five times smaller than household dust particles. It stays in the air much longer than ordinary dust before it settles. Because of its small size it requires a more efficient filter to get it out of the air.
Until this year, I have used of variety of filters with mixed results. However, this year, I started using the 3M Advanced Allergen Filters, the ones in the blue wrapper. These have a 3M Microparticle Performance Rating of 1500, but do not have a MERV rating listed. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and is a number from 1 to 12, produced from a test designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). A higher MERV rating indicates better filter performance. 3M uses particle data between 0.3 and 1.0 micron size to calculate a Microparticle Performance Rating or MPR. The higher the MPR, the better the filter. However, higher rated filters cost more.
Here are some of the Filtrete filters offered by 3M:

The additional cost of the Advanced filter is worth it if you have allergies or pets. However, if you are happy with a lower-rated and lower-cost filter, then you can continue using that one. I suggest that you check Amazon and vendors on the web to get the best price.

I specifically ordered the Carrier brand because the are a trusted brand name, and their products are always high quality. I received generic knock-offs manufactured by a company called "Accumulair". The Carrier logo is nowhere to be found, either on the filters or the box. Guess I learned my lesson. You can't believe everything Amazon puts in their product descriptions. I rated them "OK" because they will probably work. I just don't like the deception.

The listing title said the filter was 'by Lennox'. It even listed the Lennox model number of the filter. The seller did ship the filters promptly, and they seem ok, but they are not as sturdy as the Lennox filters. I should have inquired further before I made the purchase.

(More customer reviews)These MERV 12 filters are a nice step up from the fiber filters you get in the local hardware store. They felt-like pleat really capture the dirt.
This is a huge filter, so it's hard for a piece of cardboard to remain rigid. During the summer when the humidity is higher, I've had the filter get sucked into my air handler, though I honestly think that the fault of my filter port - there's no cross beam to provide support for the center of the filter. However, keep this in mind if you're buying a large filter like this.
Not much more to say - the filters do their job and you throw them away every month or two. It's not a sexy part of your HVAC system, but it's an essential one.
