APRIL AIRE 360 HUMIDIFIER Review

APRIL AIRE 360 HUMIDIFIER
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am glad I bought this unit. I was so tired of daily filling, draining and cleaning my console humidifier, and the crusty white stuff that accumulated on it (not to mention the slime mold that grew in the tank if I didn't clean it with bleach.) This unit connects to your hot water line and to a drain, so it supplies its own water and continuously cleans itself. There's no crusty white stuff, you just set the humistat and forget about it. It's fairly quiet, too.
Though the unit is fairly small (about 13 inches square) and not heavy (15 lbs.) it's more than adequate to completely humidify our 1600 sq. ft. home.
I don't know about energy usage or reliability because I just started using it, but so far the performance has been wonderful.

Honeywell HE260A Higher Capacity Whole House Bypass Humidifier Review

Honeywell HE260A Higher Capacity Whole House Bypass Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Product was relatively easy to install but I downloaded better instructions from an internet website than were included with the product. Also, my furnace had a 24v tap so the electrical hookup was easy.
Some notes:
1) I did not buy the installation kit because I did not need the sail switch (because of the 24v tap) and most of the cost of the kit is for this switch. It is much cheaper to buy only the pieces you need - they are carried at most hardware & building supply stores. Plan on spending about $30 on parts.
2) The template for cutting the humidifier hole into the duct is the instruction sheet. If I had not read this on another review, I would not have found it. Shame on Honeywell for not telling you this in the instructions!
3) Use the saddle valve to regulate the water flow to the unit, otherwise you will waste a lot of water. This was the only thing I disliked about it but I think this is the case with all new designs.
4) Instructions tell you that you can install the unit on either the supply (warm air) or return (cold air) duct. But most reviews I read from professionals recommend mounting the humidifier on the cold air return duct in case you have a water leak - will not ruin any of the furnace electronics or motor.
Overall I'm satisfied with this unit - will likely install one in both my kids houses.

I bought Aprilaire Model 600 humidifier to replace an old one and installed it myself. The installation was easy with clear instructions and duct cutting templets. Works fine, the difference in air humidity is noticeable. Automatic mode with the outside temperature sensor is a good feature. Be aware that if your furnace does not have humidifier control 24V terminals with automatic turn-on, you will need a current sensor, which is not included. Check the manual to find the current sensor model number, so that you can by it at the same time.

Honeywell HM509H8908 TrueSTEAM 9 Gal Humidifier w/H8908 Review

Honeywell HM509H8908 TrueSTEAM 9 Gal Humidifier w/H8908
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this item in less than a day with a drill, 1 3/4 inch hole saw (rated for metal), wire cutters / strippers, pliers, nut drivers, screw driver with Torx bit, tubing cutter, brazing torch, solder, solder paste, sandpaper and a few other hand tools.
Having a down-draft HVAC and a slab foundation, I needed to install the control unit remotely from the HVAC supply thus I purchased the 10 foot remote option, installed the control on the blower chamber (which is above the furnace and ac coil), then installed the remote steam outlet between the furnace and ac coil below the control unit. Having installed the remote steam outlet below the control unit, "steam rated" t-fittings and p-traps were required as per Honeywell documentation (and common sense). Unfortunately, Honeywell does not offer "steam rated" t-fittings or p-traps as part of the high priced remote installation package ($150.00 plus for a plastic nozzle, 10 feet of insulated automotive radiator hose, two hose clamps, a few brackets and a few sheet metal screws), nor did any plumbing supply or "licensed installer" in my area or on the web, thus I made my own from 1/2 inch copper tubing, elbows, unions and t-fittings purchased from the local hardware chain for around $10. You will need a brazing torch, solder, flux, etc., to construct one, but it is easy.
I am not at all happy with Honeywell customer service, as they would not provide any technical information regarding return vs. supply installation, "steam rated" components, etc., unless I was a "licensed installer". I simply wanted to know if it was acceptable to install the unit in the return air system since, as previously noted, I have a down draft HVAC and a slab foundation, thus there is no access to the supply side. Ultimately, I had to rely on common sense and an understanding of summer humidity in Oklahoma; passing steam over the ac coil in winter would be no different than passing Oklahoma humidity over the ac coil in summer, thus installing the remote nozzle in the space between the furnace and ac coil should not present a problem.
One last note; the schematic for the "recommended" air flow detector may lead one to believe that the "C" wire between the HVAC and the TrueSteam is not required if you decide not to install the "recommended" air flow detector. The "C" wire IS required regardless of the installation of the air flow detector.
In summary, easy to install, but very, very low marks for Honeywell's pathetic customer service.
As a final note, the last "licensed installer" as recommended by Honeywell installed a whole house humidifier in my home that ended up costing me $3700.00 in damages. He wired the system to come on when the blower was on, and neglected to consider whether or not the AC or HEATER was on, thus the unit continually streamed moisture into the HVAC in the summer months. The result was standing, rotting water in the supply ducts. The entire HVAC had to be replaced at my expense since he filed bankruptcy. I won't be calling Honeywell for technical advice, and I advise anyone installing this system to do the same.

Holmes S1708 Bacteriostat for Cool Mist Humidifiers Review

Holmes S1708 Bacteriostat for Cool Mist Humidifiers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For several years we have used a large humidifier during the winter months. Despite frequent cleaning and care, we had to replace the humidifier filters every few weeks. We started using the Holmes Bacteriostat last winter and only had to replace the filter a single time, three-quarters of the way through the winter.
Follow the directions on the bottle and not only save money by not having to replace the humidifier filters as often, but it can also save you from breathing mold spores growing on an untreated filter (before the filter even looks like it needs changing).

The investment in a cool mist humidifier in hot, arid climates can provide protection from static electricity while improving respiratory functions and soothing eczema and parched houseplants. Despite the numerous positive attributes, using a humidifier may also produce some harmful results. Without proper care, the humidifier becomes the breeding ground for assorted viruses, bacteria, algae, and mold. In other words, the soothing moisture released by humidifier may endanger household members more than heal them in the long run. Luckily, regular humidifier cleaning and filter replacement eliminates the spread of these unwanted elements. To stop bacteria growth in cool mist humidifiers, Holmes Products developed this Bacteriostat solution.
The 32-ounce bottle contains various chlorides to effectively kill bacteria and algae. Suited portable and stationary cool mist humidifiers alike, the bacteriostat should not be used for treating warm mist humidifiers. As with all chemical cleaners, read all safety guidelines with care prior to use and keep away from flammables and children. The bottle measures 9.25 by 3.13 by 2.94 inches and weighs 1 pound upon shipping.

Honeywell HM512WTHX9 WIRELESS TrueSteam 12Ga Humidifier Review

Honeywell HM512WTHX9 WIRELESS TrueSteam 12Ga Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am unhappy with this unit. I've had it for about two years. I live in an older house so the construction is not very tight. An HVAC servicer recommended this 12 gallon Honeywell because our flow-through units were not doing the job and I was uncomfortable with the amount of water they wasted. It was a mistake. The Honeywell barely gets the humidity up a few percent, my winter electricity bills are almost as high as they are when we run the A/C in the summer, and the mineral buildup makes the unit a pain to maintain. The mineral buildup gets stuck in places that are nearly impossible to clean out and keeps the humidifier from operating. After getting persistent "clean tank" errors today, I finally got the humidifier to work by spending two hours picking pieces of mineral out of a closed section of the reservoir with a screwdriver. I had my installer reinstall my old flow-through units and now I basically use the Honeywell as a very expensive supplement. If your house is very tightly constructed you may have a different experience, but if I had to do it again I wouldn't have bought this product.

Yh Lh Vicks 1.5 Gal Vaporizer Review

Yh Lh Vicks 1.5 Gal Vaporizer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this unit to help humidify our house in the winter. Past experiences with cool mist humidifiers were poor - having to clean mysterious brown gunk off the electronic innards was disturbing. If you're like me, you'll pretend you don't see the brown gunk. This strategy works great until the gunk becomes a pulsating biohazard that threatens to move about on its own. Warm mist humidifiers don't seem to have this problem. The Vicks Vaporizer looked a bit wimpy, but with itchy skin and static electricity zapping about, anything was better than nothing. Besides, it's cheap.
First, the unit puffs out warm odorless steam as advertised. The manual says you have to add salt to the water to really get the steam going and warns vaguely about blowing fuses if you get carried away. This made me curious, so I got out my Kill-A-Watt power meter (very cool gadget by the way) to see how much juice this thing used. Turns out it REALLY matters how much salt you add. The vaporizer was puffing steam like crazy, and using over a kilowatt of power. I emptied and refilled the water, adding the maximum recommended amount of salt (1/4 teaspoon). Steam production was still fine at a more reasonable 450 Watts.
Since I had the power meter hooked up, I wondered just how efficiently the Vicks produced steam. 450 Watts running all night is enough to want my money's worth. So, I performed a test. I filled the tank with exactly 192 ounces of room temperature water, added the salt, and plugged it into the power meter for the night. By morning it was done and the power meter read 0 Watts. There was still quite a bit of water in the tank, which I measured to be 50 ounces. The power meter said 3.15 kilowatt-hours (kWh) had been used. So, it took 3.15 kWh to vaporize 192 - 50 = 142 ounces of room temperature water. Is this reasonable? I calculated the energy required to vaporize 142 ounces of water as:
Energy to raise 142 oz from 21.1 C to 100 C = 0.37 kWh
Energy to boil 142 oz at 100 C = 2.53 kWh
Total = 2.9 kWh
So, the Vicks is about 92% energy efficient. Not bad.
Our electricity costs 8.3 cents per kWh, so the vaporizer costs me 26 cents per tank.
I'm very happy with the Vicks considering the price. Rather than spend much more on a big unit, I'll just buy a couple more of these.
To summarize:
The Good
* Uses no energy when tank runs low. Good for safety and economy.
* 92% energy efficient (about 26 cents of electricity per tank).
* Except for the steam itself, no outside surfaces get hot.
* Has a little light on top so you don't bump it in the dark.
The Bad (minus 1 star)
* Can't vaporize a full 1.5 gallons. Leaves about a quarter tank.
* Black particles appear in the tank. They don't stick to anything and rinse away easily. I suspect these are some electrolytic byproduct from running electricity through the salty water.

Dundas Jafine CHK100ZW Heat Keeper Kit With 2 Clamps Review

Dundas Jafine CHK100ZW Heat Keeper Kit With 2 Clamps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Venting all that hot dryer air into the basement seems like a good idea, much better than letting all that expensive heat go to waste.
The concept is not without its drawbacks however. The first blast of hot air is laden with moisture, moisture better vented outside even in the winter. I've found the best solution is to vent the first few minutes of the dryer outside before flipping the lever on the dryer vent.
This particular model is a little better than the one I had previously. The round lint trap is easy to pull on and off, an important feature for my wife and me. Installation was fairly easy, but I was disappointed to discover there is no hanger on the back of this vent. To keep the vent in place I wound some heavy wire around two masonry nails on either side of the vent. So far that has kept the vent secure.
Out of the box this vent, like the Ace vent it replaced, was literally coming apart at the seams. I glued the gaps in place before installation though the metal clamps probably would have pulled them together.
The Dundas dryer vent comes with two plastic clamps which I chose not to use. The metal clamps hold more securely and are much easier to remove.
The screen's mesh is not very fine so too much lint escapes into the air. For now I put a piece of stocking over the screen to catch more lint. A four inch duct clamp holds the stocking in place.
So far the vent is doing what it's supposed to do and the lever for controlling air flow is adequate; it keeps the flapper in its intended position. How long the Dundas Jafine solution will hold up to the roughness of wife and daughter remains to be seen.

Honeywell HE360A Whole House Powered Humidifier Review

Honeywell HE360A Whole House Powered Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed the HE360A onto a new Ruud 95%+ high-efficiency dual-stage heating and cooling system and I'm controlling the unit with a Ritetemp 6080 thermostat. The humidifier works beautifully, and based upon my research with heating and cooling specialists, this unit is optimally-designed to conserve power and to protect the heating and cooling system. Bypass units (that use a piece of ducting connecting the return and supply sides of the system) rob the heating system's efficiency and will push moist air through the system. Installing this unit on the supply side of the ductwork ensures that all of the humidified air will be moved into the home, not back into the system. While this design does use more water than some other units, the savings in power and the increased efficiency of the unit will minimize its financial impact. By the way, I attached the unit to a hot water supply, not cold, as this helps the moisture to be absorbed into the heated air.
The newer Honeywell humidifiers create steam to humidify the air. While this is probably optimal for humidification purposes and should minimize the amount of water used, the amount of electricity these systems use to create the steam will definitely impact your pocketbook. From a "green" perspective, I find that water is a cheaper and more renewable resource than electrical power. The old-fashioned drum humidifier units will save water, but use a holding tray of water to soak a pad that the air travels through. If not cleaned thoroughly and often, they develop mold and mildew and that will get circulated through your house... a very dangerous and unhealthy option.
Installing this unit did prove a bit of a challenge because of it's combination with the Ritetemp 6080 electronic thermostat, which includes a humidistat. Most online "experts" say that the HE360 units won't work with this kind of thermostat/humidistat because of incompatible electrical design of the two systems. However, I'm a firm believer that anything is possible with enough research and who doesn't like a challenge? To make this work, I purchased a small 24VAC SPDT relay from Grainger, part number 4A708 (about $15) and did NOT use the installation kit recommended for the humidifier or the humidistat that was provided with the unit. Since my air handler provides 24VAC to the thermostat and the thermostat interally provides settings to determine when the humidifier will run, I used the relay to control power to the 120VAC side of the system which acts as a switch to turn the entire humidifier on and off. To accomplish this, I installed a new electrical circuit and outlet to be used solely by the humidifer. I installed the relay inside an electrical box to control the power to this outlet. Using low voltage wiring I connected the relay to the "C"ommon contact on the air handler and to the "H"umidifier wire from the thermostat. I then used a wire nut to connect the two yellow wires on the HE360, which basically sets the unit "on" any time it has power. When the air handler is running in heat mode and the thermostat determines that humidification is required, the relay is powered and provides 120VAC power to the outlet and the humidifier is turned on. When the relay loses power, the 120VAC is turned off that the HE360 shuts off. The thermostat can be set to work two ways: to run the humidifier and the air handler's blower anytime when the humidistat says that humidity is required, or to run the humidifier only when the air handler is in heat mode and the blower is running and humidity is required. I could have directly wired this unit to the air handler's power, but I chose to use the outlet so that I could unplug the unit in an emergency or for service.
I strongly recommend this unit... I've tried several of whole house units over the last 20 years and this is the first that really works. I've already helped others to install these units on their HVAC systems and all of them work great, none have had any problems and all are amazed at the difference the humidifier makes in their homes.

WEB WHUMREG Humidifier Register Review

WEB WHUMREG Humidifier Register
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this register-insert humidifier after three ionic, sonic, and otherwise high-tech humidifiers had failed in three years. This one snaps into the register space in place of the normal grate. A simple filter sits in a reservoir (nest to the air channel) and can be filled with water in winter, or left alone in summer. The amount of humidification was not as high as a programmable, humidistatic unit, (the humidity rose perhaps 10%) but it was enough to take the edge off the dryness in my upstairs office. I would fill it once a day when it was semi-cold (32 F) outside, and 2 or 3 times when it was 10 F. I think it holds about a pint at a time. I would recommend something more heavy duty for a bedroom in a cold, dry climate as this is. On the other hand, this is one unit that Will Not Break Ever, unless you stand over the register and jump on the (plastic) great, or set heavy items on it. Nor do you need to decalcify it, and you could buy just about any flat soft humidifier filter and but pieces from it. A kitchen sponge has worked too. Highly recommended for home office. Silent, too.
