(More customer reviews)I got one of these Ridgid 12 gallon 5HP wet/dry vacs (WD1246) from Home Depot, at a reduced price from 69 to 49.
This was to replace a ShopVac 90L (10 gallon, 4HP) that I had bought from Lowes no more than 2 to 3 years ago, but had suddenly just stopped working. Since the ShopVac died a lot sooner than I expected, I decided to try the Ridgid, especially since the price was better after the price reduction.
I was basically expecting the two to be very similar in performance. But I was very surprised to find the Ridgid to be much more powerful. The suction on this vac is really strong compared to the ShopVac. I also found the accessory storage slots (built in on each of the castors, and two on mounted on top) hold the accessories in place much better than the Shop Vac. The Shop Vac has an accessory holder mounted to the back of the unit, but I found that the accessories easily get knocked off. In particular, the Ridgid can plug the open end of the hose into the castor leg, which keeps it pretty secure during storage. The Shop Vac has this flimsy plastic brace to tie the hose to itself, but it falls off very easily.
On the down side, the Shop Vac's appearance looks nicer, and the quality of the plastics used feels better than the Ridgid. The way the lid is secured to the tub on the Ridgid is also kind of flimsy, as is the loose fit between the hose to the lid.
Overall, though, the Ridgid's a much stronger performer. I just hope it lasts a lot longer than my Shop Vac did.

(More customer reviews)This vac is meant to be wall mounted however once mounted you can pull the vac out of the mount easily assuming that it is not full of water as a result of a wet cleanup. Being wall mounted suggests that the user will need a long hose and it does come with two that add up to 21'. One hose is a standard stiff cheap vac hose that all the others use. The second is a flexible and stretchy one (together they make up the 21'). For those that will want a long one piece hose similar to what they have at a carwash I suggest you look at Mr. Nozzle (here at Amazon) or go to your local pool supply store. This vac uses 1 1/4" hoses so make sure and buy the right hose and/or adapters to make it work. I've used mine for almost a year with no problems other than my need for a 25' one piece hose.
Only issue: as of right now it looks like you have to go to Vacmaster for filters. You shouldn't need a new one if you gently clean it. If you have compressed air it is easy. (Amazon, it would be nice to be able to buy them here)

(More customer reviews)I purchased this vacuum about a week ago- so I can't speak to the longevity of the unit, but so far it does what it does well. What it doesn't do- it probably can't do. I understand why other reviewers have given it 1 star, but frankly I don't think they were using it for what it was intended for.
What this vacuum is- I puchased this vacuum in order to pick up the ashes out of my fireplace after they had cooled off. I wasn't looking for a ton of power or durability with this vacuum since I already had a full-sized and very powerful Attix Alto wet/dry vac. What I needed was something that was easy to carry around, big enough to hold some ashes, durable enough to be used on LIGHT-duty jobs, and powerful enough to pick up LIGHT-DUTY dirt. Ashes in a fire place are going to wreak havoc on the cleanliness of any wet/dry vacuum, so I didn't want something that was expensive (thus the reason I wasn't using my regular wet/dry vac). All in all, this is a LIGHT-DUTY, PORTABLE, LIGHT WEIGHT wet/dry vacuum with decent suction. It does not suck nearly as hard as my $600 wet/dry (and it shouldn't for 1/20th the price) but it's plenty hard to get the job done. If you are looking to clean up small, dirty jobs- this is a nice little tool. I have used it only on the fireplace so far, but I think it would be decent for car cleaning and the like. It will save me from having to lug around a 50 pound vacuum for the smaller jobs. It may not grab as much as the heavier-duty vacuum, but again- just in case I haven't said it- it's LIGHT DUTY.
What this vacuum is NOT- This vacuum is NOT for cleaning heavy-duty "stuff". It is not for picking up pet hair out of carpets. It is not a stand-alone house-cleaning vacuum. It is not a powerhouse. If you are looking to buy something for general house cleaning- get something else. If you are looking to pick up pet hair or clean carpets- get something with a beater bar. If you are looking to suck a foot of water out of your basement- get a better wet/dry vacuum. Wet/Dry vacuums aren't generally meant for house cleaning anyway- but I do see a lot of Amazon reviews showing people still use them for this purpose.
Other Notes- I got this vacuum home and went to work cleaning out my two fireplaces. It worked great on the first fireplace. Then on the second fireplace it suddenly lost almost all suction. After some inspection I figured out that there is a slight issue with the end of the hose that plugs into the vacuum bucket. The pick-up end is tapered so that if something is too big, it shouldn't get past the tapered part and into the hose. However, larger objects that may squeeze through the tapered part and then turn as they travel down the hose fine, will wedge themselves into the small opening where the hose plugs into the bucket. This issue may be because I am picking up some larger coals that may crumble and conform to the shape of the hose until it hits the end of the hose. I found I don't even have to take the hose off- just squeeze the area with the coal in it to break up the coal and it goes right in. It's a bit of a nuissance, and I'd like to not have to do this, but it's still easier to use the vacuum and crunch things in the hose than to get out the broom and pan to clean the fireplace. Instead of spending 10-15 minutes cleaning the fireplace with a broom/pan, I now spend 2-3 minutes if that- and it's much less messy.
The next issue, I noticed about 10 minutes into using the vacuum on the second fireplace. While I was ducked down in the fireplace working away, everything seemed fine. However, upon looking up I noticed the entire room was engulfed in a cloud. As noted by another reviewer- this is not a hepa filtered vacuum, or even a very well filtered vacuum. It WILL kick dust into the air if you are vacuuming into an open bucket. The simple solution to this is to get a $5 high-efficiency filter bag for the vacuum. I did this and have not noticed the dust at all since I put it in. It also will keep the inside of the vacuum cleaner.
The only other issue that I saw, if it's an issue at all, is that the ring that holds the dry filter onto the foam filter could have clipped in better/tighter. It seems to hold so it's probably not an issue really, but emotionally I'd be more satisfied if I had some way of securing it with a twist, click, etc.
All in all- it's a 4 Star Item. It won't over-acheive, but it is very useful for what it is intended for.

Empty out small pond in backyard for a cleaning

Blow out garage
Blow off Driveway leaves
I took out my Vac and put it together, VERY simple, attached the wheels that slide onto unit and then can be secured with one screw, attached the hose,nested all my attachemnts in their place ON the vacuum, slid on the water filter sleeve(provided), set aside the dry filter (provided) and off to the backyard pond I went!!
This vacuum has a great big drain plug for easy draining!! no lifting and dumping water out with this one, great suction, emptied out my little pond in no time at all, worked great!!
Then the dog room, vacuumed up everything and maybe a few things I didn't mean too, this vac has some great suction so be careful when vacuuming close to an item your not trying to vacuum, some people may find the powerful suction a fault, I think it's great, it's a heavy duty vacuum, if you want something less powerful then perhaps use a house vacuum?? They also have numerous different attachments I found that have brush attachments that will help ease the powerful suction when vacuuming say your rugs or car,You may want to consider this if you plan on using this for either of those purposes. It's on my list for future purchases.
Then it was time to blow out the garage and clear the leaves and dirt off the driveway. So easy!! one push of the button and you just lift the blower right off the vac, put on your attachments and you got yourself a blower. It's handle is easy to hold and the unit itself is not heavy, I was skeptical when I ordered this vac that the blower would not be powerful enough but I am happy to say I am very pleased with the power and it's suprisingly quiet(as far as blowers go)you would not need any type of earplugs while using this unit.
I am giving this unit a well deserved 5 stars, if your looking for a great vac with a little extra (detachable blower) then give this one a try,I think you'll be pleased with what you find.

(More customer reviews)This is a great little all purpose vacuum. Just as the Technical Detail and the manufacturers website state it has a 15 Foot Cord W/ Automatic Rewind. I could not find information on Amazon about what filters and bags it required so I emailed Vacmaster and recieved a prompt response. If you are looking for fine dust filtration for this unit, this unit simply requires the standard cartridge filter (VFCF) in combination with the collection bag (VFDB) for fine dust vacuuming. The Vacmaster VF408 unit has a separate HEPA filter on it which is (VFHF). This filter is a small square filter that fits separately from the cartridge filter. The VFHF HEPA filter should always be in place on this unit. These filters can be purchased from Amazon or by calling Vacmaster.

Shop-Vac 9034000 Gore CleanStream Replacement Cartridge Filter Review

(More customer reviews)I'd suggest the cheaper, standard dry-only HEPA filter in place of this one, unless you occasionally suck up damp stuff or small amounts of liquid. This filter is not a good choice for wet applications. I also find that this filter is no easier to clean than any other reuseable cartridge filter. It's rinseable but that sounds better than it works in practice.
If you are faced with sucking up gallons of liquid, this filter doesn't work well. Unless the liquid is very clean, the filter clogs every few minutes. If I'm picking up a lot of liquid, I swap the good ol' foam sleeve back on.
This filter does work well for dry pickup. No more dusty exhaust, a huge improvement over the standard disc filters. However, it's no better than the standard HEPA filter in this regard.
Someone once suggested using an old-fashioned disc filter over the HEPA filter if you use it as a dust collector in a wood shop. I find this to be a very good combination. The disc filter takes out the bigger particles of sawdust, leaving the HEPA to do what it does best -- filter the very fine stuff. Otherwise, you will find yourself cleaning the HEPA a lot. Maybe you lose some suction with the two filters in place, but I really haven't noticed. The disc / HEPA combo would probably be nice for drywall debris and other stuff that has both big chuncks and fine dust.
