(More customer reviews)I got one of these Ridgid 12 gallon 5HP wet/dry vacs (WD1246) from Home Depot, at a reduced price from 69 to 49.
This was to replace a ShopVac 90L (10 gallon, 4HP) that I had bought from Lowes no more than 2 to 3 years ago, but had suddenly just stopped working. Since the ShopVac died a lot sooner than I expected, I decided to try the Ridgid, especially since the price was better after the price reduction.
I was basically expecting the two to be very similar in performance. But I was very surprised to find the Ridgid to be much more powerful. The suction on this vac is really strong compared to the ShopVac. I also found the accessory storage slots (built in on each of the castors, and two on mounted on top) hold the accessories in place much better than the Shop Vac. The Shop Vac has an accessory holder mounted to the back of the unit, but I found that the accessories easily get knocked off. In particular, the Ridgid can plug the open end of the hose into the castor leg, which keeps it pretty secure during storage. The Shop Vac has this flimsy plastic brace to tie the hose to itself, but it falls off very easily.
On the down side, the Shop Vac's appearance looks nicer, and the quality of the plastics used feels better than the Ridgid. The way the lid is secured to the tub on the Ridgid is also kind of flimsy, as is the loose fit between the hose to the lid.
Overall, though, the Ridgid's a much stronger performer. I just hope it lasts a lot longer than my Shop Vac did.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this vacuum about a week ago- so I can't speak to the longevity of the unit, but so far it does what it does well. What it doesn't do- it probably can't do. I understand why other reviewers have given it 1 star, but frankly I don't think they were using it for what it was intended for.
What this vacuum is- I puchased this vacuum in order to pick up the ashes out of my fireplace after they had cooled off. I wasn't looking for a ton of power or durability with this vacuum since I already had a full-sized and very powerful Attix Alto wet/dry vac. What I needed was something that was easy to carry around, big enough to hold some ashes, durable enough to be used on LIGHT-duty jobs, and powerful enough to pick up LIGHT-DUTY dirt. Ashes in a fire place are going to wreak havoc on the cleanliness of any wet/dry vacuum, so I didn't want something that was expensive (thus the reason I wasn't using my regular wet/dry vac). All in all, this is a LIGHT-DUTY, PORTABLE, LIGHT WEIGHT wet/dry vacuum with decent suction. It does not suck nearly as hard as my $600 wet/dry (and it shouldn't for 1/20th the price) but it's plenty hard to get the job done. If you are looking to clean up small, dirty jobs- this is a nice little tool. I have used it only on the fireplace so far, but I think it would be decent for car cleaning and the like. It will save me from having to lug around a 50 pound vacuum for the smaller jobs. It may not grab as much as the heavier-duty vacuum, but again- just in case I haven't said it- it's LIGHT DUTY.
What this vacuum is NOT- This vacuum is NOT for cleaning heavy-duty "stuff". It is not for picking up pet hair out of carpets. It is not a stand-alone house-cleaning vacuum. It is not a powerhouse. If you are looking to buy something for general house cleaning- get something else. If you are looking to pick up pet hair or clean carpets- get something with a beater bar. If you are looking to suck a foot of water out of your basement- get a better wet/dry vacuum. Wet/Dry vacuums aren't generally meant for house cleaning anyway- but I do see a lot of Amazon reviews showing people still use them for this purpose.
Other Notes- I got this vacuum home and went to work cleaning out my two fireplaces. It worked great on the first fireplace. Then on the second fireplace it suddenly lost almost all suction. After some inspection I figured out that there is a slight issue with the end of the hose that plugs into the vacuum bucket. The pick-up end is tapered so that if something is too big, it shouldn't get past the tapered part and into the hose. However, larger objects that may squeeze through the tapered part and then turn as they travel down the hose fine, will wedge themselves into the small opening where the hose plugs into the bucket. This issue may be because I am picking up some larger coals that may crumble and conform to the shape of the hose until it hits the end of the hose. I found I don't even have to take the hose off- just squeeze the area with the coal in it to break up the coal and it goes right in. It's a bit of a nuissance, and I'd like to not have to do this, but it's still easier to use the vacuum and crunch things in the hose than to get out the broom and pan to clean the fireplace. Instead of spending 10-15 minutes cleaning the fireplace with a broom/pan, I now spend 2-3 minutes if that- and it's much less messy.
The next issue, I noticed about 10 minutes into using the vacuum on the second fireplace. While I was ducked down in the fireplace working away, everything seemed fine. However, upon looking up I noticed the entire room was engulfed in a cloud. As noted by another reviewer- this is not a hepa filtered vacuum, or even a very well filtered vacuum. It WILL kick dust into the air if you are vacuuming into an open bucket. The simple solution to this is to get a $5 high-efficiency filter bag for the vacuum. I did this and have not noticed the dust at all since I put it in. It also will keep the inside of the vacuum cleaner.
The only other issue that I saw, if it's an issue at all, is that the ring that holds the dry filter onto the foam filter could have clipped in better/tighter. It seems to hold so it's probably not an issue really, but emotionally I'd be more satisfied if I had some way of securing it with a twist, click, etc.
All in all- it's a 4 Star Item. It won't over-acheive, but it is very useful for what it is intended for.

I didn't think the 1.75 HP was gonna be enough and almost bought the Armor-All vacuum because it was 2.0 HP - boy was I wrong. It's almost too powerful! It blows my curtains in a frenzy from across the room at 20ft. and the sucking power is equally intense. It can draw in a gallon of water in seconds, it will not only pick up the dirt on the carpet-it will pick up the carpet if it's not nailed down.Very easy to switch from vacuum to blower,just pull out the hose from one side and plug in the other side and turn on.On-off switch right on top-don't have to look for it.Easy to clean-never needs bags. I'm so happy with this vac I'm gonna buy another one. This is the best sweeper I ever used, even more power than a full-sized vacuum. Very light to carry but seems very rugged-tough. (More customer reviews)I bought this vac when my old shop vac started spewing dust due to worn out filters and seals. I use this type of vac to clean pet hair, dust, sand and dirt from the hardwood and tile floors in my home. I didn't want to deal with a consumer quality vac that would lose efficiency as it filled with dirt.
1. The tank is stainless steel, but could be dented if you abuse it. I wouldn't drag it down the stairs by the hose. With proper care, it should last a lifetime. The handle and wheels are permanently attached to the unit, so it might be hard to invert the tank for cleaning purposes. The motor, cord, attached filter and top lid completely remove from the tank for cleaning.
2. The cord is plenty long enough for most homes, and the 12 foot hose is fantastic. You can reach ceiling fans without having to carry the vac up the ladder.
3. The wheels are sturdy, and make moving the vac very easy.
4. The motor is reasonably quiet (at least compared to my Sears unit), and sufficiently powerful to vacuum sand from the floor, through the 12 foot hose, and into the tank. Although the HP rating seems small, the motor is a two stage unit which much more efficient than the single stage units seen on cheaper vacs. Even after three days of cleaning a very dusty house, garage, and automobile (without emptying the dust bag), there was sufficient suction for efficient cleaning. I ran the unit from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM for three days, and didn't notice any heat problems or strange noises indicating that I was overtaxing the motor.
5. This unit comes with a paper filter, and I added vacuuum bags to eliminate any possible release of dust from the unit. The vac bags are a great idea. They protect the paper filter, keep the inside of the vac clean, and make for very easy cleanup. On the down side, they do prevent you from easily retrieving property that accidentally gets sucked into the vac.
6. The tools are pretty rugged, but not typical of the $400 industrial vacs that I've seen. This is probably a good thing since such tools are very heavy, bulky and hard to handle. The supplied tools will probably last for years.
Shop Vac's customer service was great (I called them with a number of questions), and they were nice enough to tell me that parts could be purchased at Wal-Mart (instead of having to order them from Shop Vac directly).
If you're going to be vacuuming an office, a small shop or a home, this vac will last a lifetime. I'm very happy with the purchase.

(More customer reviews)This is a great little all purpose vacuum. Just as the Technical Detail and the manufacturers website state it has a 15 Foot Cord W/ Automatic Rewind. I could not find information on Amazon about what filters and bags it required so I emailed Vacmaster and recieved a prompt response. If you are looking for fine dust filtration for this unit, this unit simply requires the standard cartridge filter (VFCF) in combination with the collection bag (VFDB) for fine dust vacuuming. The Vacmaster VF408 unit has a separate HEPA filter on it which is (VFHF). This filter is a small square filter that fits separately from the cartridge filter. The VFHF HEPA filter should always be in place on this unit. These filters can be purchased from Amazon or by calling Vacmaster.

The Dust Deputy DIY Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the molded Dust Deputy to attach to my RIGID shopvac. The deputy worked well in separating fine particles of dirt and dust and made a huge difference in keeping the shopvac's filter clean. The kit was easy to assemble but I was concerned with the rigidity of the top lid of the plastic bucket where the cyclone attaches. The lid flexes under the weight of the cyclone and seems flimsy. I modified the top lid by constructing a plywood disk that attaches on the bottom side of the lid to add support for the cyclone separator. This keeps the plastic lid from sagging under the weight of the cyclone separator and helps keep it snapped tight to the lower bucket.
If you purchase this unit, be careful not to drop it, mine fell to the floor when the suction hose became trapped and I pulled the shopvac by the handle. The unit with the hoses attached fell on the concrete floor and shattered. I am not sure what type of plastic it is made of, but so far it has resisted the effects of many types of glue commonly available. I have since purchased the metal version of the Dust Deputy, it is much more robust and fits perfectly in the existing hardware contained in the plastic kit. I am very happy with the performance with the Dust Deputy, but you may consider spending a little more money to purchase the more robust metal version.

I got this one to walk around the house and clean out the corners; along the side of the fridge; around the fireplace etc. Works great. Picks up little wood chunks around the fireplace just like a shop-vac should - not like an upright which requires major surgery when it breaths in such things. Not as noisy as an upright hoover. The fifty foot cord is more than enough and you really can walk around the house comfortably with the thing on your back. It uses throw-away bags and so far, I haven't been able to find a source (including the shop-vac web site). Assume those will be available soon.

Ridgid WD4522 4.5 Gallon Pro Pack Portable Wet/Dry Vacuum Review

(More customer reviews)This is seriously one of the best tools I have purchased for my home in the last 10 years. I use it constantly for various tasks.
First, it is a heavy-duty wet/dry vacuum. That means you can easily vacuum up everything from crusted mud to broken glass to kid's art supplies without any worries. It has strong suction and a wide nozzle, so it seems to just pick up everything. When a glass breaks, I use this vacuum to get the little tiny shards that brooms always miss. The suction is so strong I something use it on my thick carpets instead of my conventional vacuum with rug-beater. It pulls things out from deep inside the fibers. I also use it to clean my car--it works better than those units at the gas station you have to feed constantly with quarters. I recently cleaned my computer with it. There are no small nozzles included, but I didn't need them. I opened the top of the computer, held the big nozzle about 6" above it, and all of the dust was sucked up easily.
As for wet operation, when my washing machine overflowed, I had water all over the floor. I merely opened the top, removed the filter, and I could then suck up the water easily off of the floor. When one of my kids vomited on the carpet, I used some Resolve Carpet Cleaner, water, a brush, and this vacuum to get it looking like new. There is a great flat-nozzle that works wonders to pull water out of thick carpeting.
The best part about the vacuum is the package. Sure--4.5 gallons is not a huge volume, but I frankly do not have room in my home for a 16-gallon wet/dry vacuum. For the rare time I need to vacuum water, I can take a few trips to the sink to empty the tub. The real genius of this vacuum is the square shape. Any other small wet-dry vacuum is normally still a round shape (just like their bigger brothers). Ridgid was genius to make this square. It fits easily on a shelf with other toolboxes. All of the attachments fit inside the lid securely. Nothing is dangling off the side attached to some clip. Once you put this away, everything stays put.
The filter does a great job of keeping the air clean as well. I have even vacuumed up dust from sheetrock. Just be sure to remove the filter before you vacuum up water, and clean the filter occasionally. I like to take it outside and chuck it against the concrete. That does the trick. About once a year, I use my conventional home bagged-vacuum cleaner to suck the finer dust out of the filter.
In short, I am not a contractor, and just needed a heavy-duty vacuum for the realities of life that did not take up my whole storage area. This genius device fit the bill perfectly (and even my wife knows how to use it). I highly recommend it.

Husqvarna 125B 28cc 2-Stroke 170-MPH Gas-Powered Handheld Gas Blower Review

(More customer reviews)I previously owned an electric blower and then I had the Poulan Pro PPB300E that worked fine for the first couple of times I used it. Then for the next two years it was very hard to start, the engine would not run properly and had to keep it running mingling with the throttle and choke, and when it ran it did not seem to blow as it should have. Now it finally gave its ghost, the engine locked up. Since it was not worth fixing it, I went out and bought the Husqvarna 125B
I had a few surprises:
- At the first touch I noticed how much lighter is than the Poulan. After mounting the air pipe and nozzle, although is so light, it feels "solid".
- The starting rope can be pulled very easily. In fact so easy that at the first pull, I put my back into it and pulled so hard that I reached the end of the rope probably and the handle just flew out of my hand. I know... you're not supposed to do that, but it didn't seem to have hurt it.
- It started at the third pull, which I think is great for a brand new motor.
- Thereafter, I stopped and restarted as I was cleaning the yard several times, and every time it started at the first pull.
- The air speed and the blowing pattern seem to be very good because the dirt blows away really fast, significantly faster than the other blowers I used.
- I love the throttle being mounted on the handle as it gives you nice control over the air speed, especially when you are close to the finish and try to pile up the dirt. Also I love that it has a "cruise control" lever, which you can move to get the desired speed and then you don't have to hold the throttle, which is helpful on larger areas.
I see nothing wrong or that I would liked changed yet, so the only question remaining is how long it will last.
One note: I really do not see what is the difference between the 125B and 125Bx. The 125BVx is the same but comes with a vacuum kit.

(More customer reviews)These are so much easier to clean up than the combination filter (foam / paper) that are supposedly usable for wet and dry pick up. I used my ShopVac to empty a algae clogged man made pond earlier this season. The algae was simple and fast to rinse out of the foam filter sleeve. It would have been a major task with the other filter. The Shopvac 905-85-1 Foam Filter Sleeves are less expensive than the other filters. When they get too gross or filthy, just toss and replace it.
I think these foam filters are the better choice for wet pick up uses and I'm happy with this purchase.

We got the BLUE Ridgid VF5000 Microban Treated Fine Dust Replacement Filter at Home Depot for about 23.00. It was well worth it. We cleaned all the drywall dust from my house with this bad boy. I heard many people would have to toss them after use. Not with this. Cleaning a 2,500 square foot house twice with this filter. The finest dust was cought. When it got really full we had to empty the canister and clean the filter outside the house a few times per hour. But well worth the extra work cleaning then getting a new one. When we were finished I thought that this filter was shot. NOT SO. I took it home and dusted it off with my other sweeper and cleaned it - then ran under warm water and rinsed all the fine dust off. We let it sit and dry overnight and it was like brand new! Now I just need to know what I can use for WET VACCUMING! Love RIGID!

I'm quite impressed with the Miele bags. I'm used to having to deal with paper vacuum bags, the kind that have a cardboard flange which has to be pushed onto a stem or hose in the bag compartment: the kind of bag that always seems to have dirt sifting out of it when it's time to install a fresh bag.
It's a pleasure to use Miele vacuum bags. They're made of a nonwoven fabric which is lined with aluminum foiled plastic, and they have a plastic flange that neatly snaps into a holder. It's impossible to install them incorrectly because of some thoughtfully-designed arrow guides. Once the bag is snapped into place and the door of the bag compartment is lowered, the vacuum hose automatically inserts into the Miele vacuum bag.
When it's time to change the bag, all I have to do is hold the bag by two little tabs at the top of the flange, and lift it up out of the holder. A plastic tab rolls down over the opening in the bag, automatically sealing the bag for disposal.
Someone put a lot of thought into the design of these bags and it shows!
