Amana APO77R 7000-BTU Portable Electronic Air Conditioner Review

Amana APO77R 7000-BTU Portable Electronic Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

As a previous poster noted, Amana does not acknowledge the existence of these rebadged Haier units on its site. Unfortunately, Haier also does not seem to acknowledge them, making support put-near impossible. The a/c unit does require a small window (or a large one largely blocked off) which can take some work if your windows are not the right size, but that's true of any unit like these. It is a very handy unit, without the need to empty buckets. It is also fairly noisy, with odd controls that require the remote. It was great the first year we had it, less so the second despite careful storage. You'd probably do better with a domestic-production (or European, or Japanese) unit if you can find one.

Other highlights include multi-directional continuous airflow, an easy-access air filter, and portable casters for smooth transport from one location to another. Haier ESA3087 7,800-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

Haier ESA3087 7,800-BTU Energy-Star Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control

This is the worst A/C I have ever seen. First of all, even though it says on the box "ultra quiet", it is nearly as noisy as vacuum cleaner, you won't be able to sleep or talk while it is on. Also it doesn't cool well, we have a very small bedroom {only big enough to fit a queen size bed and two dressers, with not much room left} and it doesn't cool it nearly as well as our old GE Air Conditioner {that is only 5000 BTU}. I am taking it back today and will rather wait for a nicer one {all the stores are out of A/C right now and this one was the only one we found, but better nothing then this one}

With a cooling capacity of 7,800 BTUs, this window air conditioner helps maintain a comfortable living space during the hot and muggy summer months. The unit's easy-to-use electronic controls provide a digital time and temperature display, plus a convenient 24-hour on/off timer--great for cooling the living room right before arriving home from work or for keeping the bedroom at a perfect sleeping temperature then turning off on its own in the morning. Choose from three cool settings and three fan speeds. A full-function remote control comes included for changing the settings from across the room. Other highlights include top-discharge airflow; an Enviro-Clean coil; an electrostatic air filter that reduces the presence of mold, dust, and pollen; ultra-quiet operation; and easy installation with the included quick-snap curtain install kit. Delonghi Pinguino PAC A110 11,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Delonghi Pinguino PAC A110 11,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

We bought this air conditioner in June of 2008. It ran during daytime hours from June until October. Last weekend, the compressor died.
The air conditioner is under warranty, but the warranty requires that the owner pay the cost of shipping the unit to the nearest repair center. We're in Texas, the nearest repair center is in Tampa, Florida. Shipping will cost over $100.
For a $500 unit to break down 4 months after purchase is unacceptable. To then be forced to pay over $100 in shipping costs in order to get warranty service is unbelievable.
Save your money, find a different unit that will meet your needs. As it stands, I'm either out the $500 we paid for the unit or I have to cough up an additional $100+ to ship it to Tampa for repairs. Astonishing.
DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK

SPT WA-1230E 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

SPT WA-1230E 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control
Average Reviews:

I bought this AC unit during the excess heat wave this summer. The unit, (once properly vented) works really well for cooling my bed room but it shuts off when the water needs drained. Durning these hot temperatures this is after only 2-2.5 hrs. Draining the water is not an easy task because the drain is only 1 inch from the floor so you can only use a really really shallow dish. It does come with a hose to connect to a drain for continous drainage but the drain must be below or at the same level as the AC unit.
This drainage problem makes the unit NOT useful for long term cooling (you can't run it all night or use it to cool while at work)
As a long term solution I am working on buidling a stand to set the unit on for continous drainage into a bucket but it is heavey and vibration makes noise a problem. Other portable AC unit have a collecting bottle which is easy to revome for drainage.

Ideal for rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner features a 12,000-BTU cooling capacity and an energy-efficiency rating of 12.63. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. Soleus Air PH3-12R-03, Portable Air Conditioner/Heater/Dehumidifier/Fan, 12,000 BTUs Review

Soleus Air PH3-12R-03, Portable Air Conditioner/Heater/Dehumidifier/Fan, 12,000 BTUs
Average Reviews:

This air conditioner/heater/dehumidifier is highly overrated by the manufacturer. 12,000 BTU should make your home feel like a refrigerator. It doesn't! It doesn't come close to the air cooling capacity of window units with less than half this rating. The drainage outlet is located way too close to the floor thereby not allowing for a hose to drain properly without elevating the unit. While there is a condensation overflow tank drainage again is an issue. I ran the unit for a solid eight hours at the lowest temperature setting/highest fan speed and the first floor of my small home was only marginally cooler. I was very disappointed as I had hoped this was the answer to both my cooling and heating needs.

SPT WA-9020E 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

SPT WA-9020E 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control

I have central air, but my bedroom upstairs is usually 5-10 degrees warmer than the other bedrooms (vaulted ceiling). This product works perfectly even though the room is much larger than 250sq ft.This portable AC only costs 50 cents a day to run, considerably less than running the central air. It's quieter than I expected and the air is very cold. The only thing I don't like is the instruction manual - just not enough info. The exhaust hose must be mounted properly to the outside through a window. All portable AC units create a vacuum in the room and if the exhaust hose is not practically air tight, more warm air from outside will come in than cold air blowing out. I have had it for a week now and it has yet to need the water reservoir emptied.

SPT SF-608R Portable Evaporative Air Cooler Review

SPT SF-608R Portable Evaporative Air Cooler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, this is NOT an air conditioner. If you expect your room to be freezing cold, this is not the product for you. It's a COOLER, and it does its job very well. It works by evaporating water. Try soaking a T-shirt, wringing it out, and putting it on wet to get the effect. It doesn't work very well in humid areas, but it works GREAT where the air is dry.
I'm in southern California, where the humidity varies pretty widely. I place the cooler six or eight feet from my chair, and on the hottest days I'm quite comfortable.
Benefits:
* it's about 1/5 the cost of an air conditioner
* operating expense is a fraction of the cost of air conditioning
* neat features! (timer, sleep function, etc.)
* remote control
Drawbacks:
* it's not freezing cold like air conditioning.

Versatile, lightweight, and economical, this evaporative air cooler easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in the home or office. Unlike a fan that blows hot air and more energy efficient than an air conditioner, the appliance uses water to cool a personal space up to 12 degrees lower than the ambient temperature. The air cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat). The unit sucks air through a wick saturated with water; as the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. A cool air stream then gets blown out the front of the unit through oscillating louvers for even distribution.
The appliance can also be used as just a fan or a humidifier when temperature is not an issue. Easily change the settings with the included remote control. The unit provides an air flow of 23 feet per second, a water-consumption rate of 0.6 to 0.7 liters per hour, and a 10-liter water-tank capacity. Other details include a nylon and photocatalystic filter, three air speeds, a sleep mode, and a timer that can be set from a half hour to seven-and-a-half hours. Though perfect for use in dry climates, please note that the appliance does not work very effectively in areas with high humidity since it utilizes water to cool. The 60-watt air cooler measures 12 by 16 by 25 inches and carries a one-year warranty.
