Even in low humidity New Mexico this unit cannot cool any room, but right in front of the unit you'll get 3-4 degrees of relief (verified with a good thermometer) plus the benefit of blowing air, moving side to side. The bells and whistles ("natural" and "sleep" modes) are crap, and the unit is moderately loud on the lowest speed (unbearably so at higher speeds). Still it performs its basic function, and I wonder if any portable swamp cooler really works that well. Limited relief at an acceptable cost.

A versatile and economical way to cool and humidify the surrounding air, this evaporative air cooler, humidifier, and fan easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in the home. Unlike a fan that blows hot air and more energy efficient than an air conditioner, the appliance uses water to cool a personal space up to 12 degrees lower than the ambient temperature. The air cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat). Other details include an LCD panel; three air speeds; three modes of computer-controlled airflows that include Normal, Simulated Natural Wind, and Sleep; a washable filter; a 7-liter water tank; lockable casters; and a timer that can be set from a half hour to seven-and-a-half hours. Though perfect for use in dry climates, please note that the appliance does not work very effectively in areas with high humidity since it utilizes water to cool. The 160-watt air cooler measures 14 by 16 by 32-1/2 inches and carries a one-year warranty.

SPT WA-1230E 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this AC unit during the excess heat wave this summer. The unit, (once properly vented) works really well for cooling my bed room but it shuts off when the water needs drained. Durning these hot temperatures this is after only 2-2.5 hrs. Draining the water is not an easy task because the drain is only 1 inch from the floor so you can only use a really really shallow dish. It does come with a hose to connect to a drain for continous drainage but the drain must be below or at the same level as the AC unit.
This drainage problem makes the unit NOT useful for long term cooling (you can't run it all night or use it to cool while at work)
As a long term solution I am working on buidling a stand to set the unit on for continous drainage into a bucket but it is heavey and vibration makes noise a problem. Other portable AC unit have a collecting bottle which is easy to revome for drainage.

Design:
I selected this primarily for the design and color scheme. I did not want another white/beige appliance or some psychedelic blue or pink candy painted device. Conventionally shaped and subtle in overall appearance. Top marks.
Functionality: The Whynter air cooler is a misnomer, while it does a solid job cooling a 150square foot space, it does a whole lot more than cool. The heat was nice to have when the temperature dipped and the humidity control is very useful when dealing with dry air resulting from heater use. Intuitive and easy to control. The water tank at the base take a bit of jiggering to slide in and out but otherwise I do not have any issues with it. The filters built into the unit do provide some degree of purification. My room air purifier lasted about 30% longer before the indicator light came on. It is light weight and portable, but be careful when you move it with the water tank filled.
Quality:
Well built with softtouch controls. The remote control was responsive and fit nicely into the attached holster on the unit. Material is were primarily plastic. Easy to clean and maintain. Pre-filter is easily removed and cleaned. No fuss device.
Price:
Quite reasonable for all that it does. I would take this over 3 or 4 separate devices any day.
Overall:
One of my better purchases this year. top scores across the board.

(More customer reviews)I got this to supplement the window unit I've been using for years and ended up just completely replacing the window unit.
Very robotic design, it stands around 3ft tall and is in fact rather slim once you take it out of the packaging. Came with all the necessary accessories to get it running immediately. Hooking it up and putting the hot air vent where my window A/C used to be was extremely straightforward.
We usually power it up after my daughter returns from pre-school and set the temperature to around 74F. It usually shuts off at about 2am when the room and outside temps are nice and comfortable. The air is extremely cold around the unit and gets a good sized room down to a nice temp really fast. It seems very quiet during the day with all the other sounds and my daughter has slept like a baby ever since we got it. I does emit a low hum when it's cooling but otherwise the fan sound is not noticeable to me. You can turn it on high for a few minutes but after awhile, that's overkill. It does a great job on a low fan setting once the room is almost at the temp you want it at.
I really like the idea of not having to use central air like in our old apartment. I think over time the utility savings will easily cover the cost of the unit. The best part is I can bring it with us if we ever move.
It's worked excellently for a couple of weeks now and I may just end up getting another for our own room.

We bought this back in September and took it out again recently for the heater function.
Nicely designed unit that has a clean modern look. The display is a concealed LCD band that is simple and understandable without an overload information and meaningless statistics. Although easy to roll around, be sure to get help when lifting up above a foot. The window kit was good quality and overall setup was considerably easy. Just hookup the hoses to the kit and fit the kit snugly into the window opening.
Cools wonderfully. I use it specifically in the baby's room and occasionally in the study. The dual hose design helps with the energy efficiency and overall cooling or heating out. Both rooms are about 18x18 and this unit has no problem cooling down a 95F room to a comfortable temp in less than 30 mins. I'm surprised that the cooling throughput of this unit is actually 20%-30% faster than another 14000 BTU that I have. Nothing scientific but even my wife notices the significant difference.
The heating option is not for heavy duty heating but it works perfectly as a spot heater when you don't want to crank central heat up too much.
To sum it up, this is a surprisingly efficient unit albeit slightly bulky but gives great bang for the buck.
