Because it is a recirculating system when it starts to go bad the gunk ends up in the water in the tub and it becomes a little rank. It is difficult to get into some of the places where minerals build up. You will want to filter the water you put in there, like with a Brita filter. Otherwise you will be taking it apart and cleaning it every month. And it really wasn't made to be taken apart. The best way I have found to clean it is to make a nice mix of water and white vinegar and let it sit in the tub to get the minerals off. Then just run it with the vinegar in it. Your house will smell like vinegar for a couple of hours, but it will dissolve all of the mineral buildup everywhere that you can't reach, and the machine will be very clean afterward.
